Why is underlayment required for LVP and laminate floors?

Underlayment acts as a cushion, sound dampener, and vapor barrier. It smooths out minor subfloor imperfections and blocks moisture from affecting your planks. Without the correct underlayment, your floor may feel hollow or become susceptible to mold and buckling.

Do I need underlayment if my flooring already has an attached pad?

In many cases, no. Many of the premium LVP and laminate products we carry include an integrated pad. However, for installations over a concrete slab, we often recommend adding a 6-mil vapor barrier to prevent coastal humidity and ground moisture from rising through the floor.

Which underlayment is best for sound reduction?

Look for products with high IIC (Impact Insulation Class) and STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings. For multi-story homes or apartments in Santa Cruz County, we carry specialized acoustic underlayments that meaningfully reduce footstep and furniture noise between floors.
